Eno River Rugby's History:
It seems like only yesterday.....Nina Heard, Deb Barrow and Deb Green got together a sevens team in the summer of 1991 and used that as a nucleus to organize a fifteens team that fall. Nina Heard and Deb Barrow were our first coaches. We had players from all over the Triangle and Triad on those first teams and so we chose the name Eno River since it reflected the regional nature of the team. At that time we were the only women's club team between D.C. and Atlanta, and the only women's team in North Carolina. We traveled to NoVa for our first game that September with a team ranging in age from 16 to 41, and only having 4 people on our roster who had played rugby before. We lost to NoVa by a lot that day but played a very close game with Gotham from NYC. We showed steady improvement and won the social division at the Atlanta Ruggerfest that November in our very first season. That following spring season we whupped NoVa's ass and took second place in the Dogwood Tournament in Knoxville. We also won the social division at the Ruggerama sevens tournament that summer (1992). Other tournament highlights include winning the 1992 Atlanta Ruggerfest, qualifying for the 1993 Eastern Rugby Sevens Championship Tournament, a couple of second and third places at D.C. Ruggerfest social division. Of course, most importantly, we are two-time defending NCRU champions (1998 and 1999).
